There are a few things I wanted to draw your attention to:
1. Build Louder Global Village Trip Presentation: Last month I participated in a Build Louder Trip to Guatemala with Habitat International and we have the privilege of hosting a lunchtime brown bag event with the leader of that trip and Director of Advocacy and Capacity Building for Habitat’s Government Relations and Advocacy Office in DC. The flyer and info are below and I highly recommend all of you try to make it if your schedule next week allows.
2. Vacancy Count: Picture the Homeless is about to embark on their vacant unit count thatwas highlighted in last Fall’s training. They will launch the count on June 11th. 20 community boards with the highest density per square mile of vacant property and lots in all 5 boroughs have been selected and they are looking for volunteers for the count. 3. NYC Advocacy Updates: The campaign to renew and strengthen our state’s rent laws continues with the regulations expiring in less than a month. If you haven’t already signed up for our online Housing Justice Action Center, please do so to receive timely action alerts. There are also two events you might be interested in…

Last month, a team of Habitat-NYC friends, board members and staff had the opportunity to join Habitat International's Build Louder trip to Guatemala, led by the incomparable Jose Quinonez. The life-changing trip gave participants the incredible opportunity to both help build a home for a family in need as well as advocate for real change for a Guatemalan slum community living in the most dire of circumstances…with the most OUTSTANDING RESULTS!

Jose Quinonezbegan his professional nonprofit career in refugee camps in Southern Mexico, where he oversaw the implementation of relief services to more than 1 million refugees from Guatemala and El Salvador. Seven years later, Jose accepted a position to represent the Guatemala Justice and Peace Commission in Washington, D.C., as director of the Advocacy and Human Rights Investigation unit. Before coming to Habitat for Humanity International, Jose worked for five years in the Balkans with internally displaced people and refugees who were victims of the civil unrest in that area. Jose joined Habitat for Humanity as associate director of advocacy training in 2007 and now serves as the director of advocacy capacity building.
