In its meeting on September 27, the last meeting before the election of new council members on October 16, the Parish Council reflected on the initiatives and accomplishments of the 2010-2011 year and considered the challenges of the coming year.  LuAnn Johns and Pat Almonrode marked their final meeting as member of the Parish Council by offering their perspectives on the Council and the Congregation.  Both urged the Council to continue efforts to bring new people into the Congregation and to strengthen the channels of communication between the Council and the Congregation.

Eight new members were received: Joe Brewer, Brett Edwards, John Keogh, Stephen Holzemer, Nicoline Strom-Jensen, Stephen Dubuque, Laura Barrios and Ayleen Malvenda-Barrios.  It was noted with appreciation that some of them are already serving on parish committees.

The Council approved Pastor Spellman’s participation in the Covenant of Shared Responsibility, a professional development program offered by the United Church of Christ and congratulated her on her acceptance into this selective program, which is expected to provide insights useful to the ministry of Saint Peter’s.  The Council also approved a covenant with the Metro Synod of New York and Redeemer Lutheran of Queens Village, under which Pastor O’Hara will serve Redeemer as it seeks to build a firm foundation for its continuing ministry.  Pastor O’Hara reported on hopeful signs at Redeemer that are apparent only a few weeks after the beginning of his work there.

The Council received the report of the nominating committee, which recommended Nancy MacLeod, Connie Peterson and Carol Trower for second terms and Lee Malecki and John Mostenan for initial terms.

Watson Bosler reported on the budget based on unaudited reports.  Although expenses in 2010-2011 have been kept within the budgeted amounts, the Congregation’s income has been substantially under budget.  The major shortfalls have been in stewardship, plate collections, and space use rentals.  The budgetary situation highlights the importance of this year’s stewardship drive, now underway.
